Join Our Annual Tryouts

FUSA holds open tryouts every May for all age groups (U8–U14/15). Tryouts are free to register and open to all current Fairfield residents. Players are evaluated and team rosters are set for the upcoming Fall/Spring season.

Roster placements and team offers are communicated to families by mid-June. Accepting a roster offer triggers the payment process — see Travel — Info & Costs for fees and payment options.

Day-Of Instructions

To ensure a smooth evaluation process:

  • Arrive 10 minutes early to check in and warm up.
  • Remember to bring your soccer ball, water bottle, shin guards, and cleats.
  • Parents, please remain in your vehicles during evaluations; coaches will conduct assessments with players only.

Weather-related cancellations will be communicated via email, so check your inbox on the day of tryouts if the weather looks questionable. Please note that no walk-ups are allowed; pre-registration through PlayMetrics is required for participation.

How Team Placement Works

Team placement decisions are made by FUSA's coaching staff and directors following tryouts. Here's how the process works:

Evaluation Process

  • Existing players are assessed at the start and end of each season throughout the year.
  • New players are evaluated at tryouts in May.
  • Parents and spectators must leave the field during evaluations to allow coaches to assess players without pressure or distraction.

Team Tiers

  • U8: Teams are balanced for equal development. No competitive tiering at this age group.
  • U9–U15: Teams are tiered by competitive level:
  • Black — top tier (most competitive)
  • Red — second tier
  • White — third tier
  • Blue — fourth tier
  • Teams are built top-down — the Black team is filled first, then Red, etc.

Roster Caps

  • U9–U11: 12–13 players per roster
  • U13 and older: 18–20 players per roster

Playing Up

The top approximately 10% of an age group may be considered for placement on a team one year above their birth-year age group. Exceptions exist for U8 players and for strategic roster needs at the discretion of FUSA staff.

League Placement by Tier

  • U8–U11: CJSA Travel League
  • U12–U15 top tier (Black): EDP or CJSA top bracket
  • U12–U15 other tiers: CJSA Travel League
